Article: Applications for the new BFI FAN Blockbuster Horror Season are now open!

Funding is now available for FAN exhibitors to present special curated film events and enhanced film programmes as part of the new Blockbuster season, IN DREAMS ARE MONSTERS, led by BFI in partnership with the Film Audience Network.

Running from October-December 2022, IN DREAMS ARE MONSTERS will be a major UK-wide film and events season, charting how the monsters of horror have evolved, made physical the anxieties and social issues of their times, and how we react when faced with the monster within. The season will explore Horror cinema as the “folklore of the 20th century”, and delve into the genre’s radical, politicised nature and imagery.

The season will be structured around five key archetypes, each informing a different flavour of horror, from seductive vampires to gory zombies and spooky ghosts.

Major Programmes, a XFAN initiative led by Film Hub Midlands will be offering up to £15,000 for small to large scale events for cinemas, festivals and multi arts & media organisations to present original and ambitious in-venue and hybrid seasons, events and screenings that celebrate this experimental and experiential genre. Screening support for up to £500 will also be available.

Major Programmes is also pleased to be commissioning the ICO Touring Menu for the season which will include six titles with subsidised minimum guarantees and reflecting the BFI Southbank programme will be available to book, to simplify participation for independent cinemas and community screens.

For more information on the open call, the season’s creative brief, the ICO tour, and how to apply, please visit the Major Programmes website.

The BFI will announce the programme for the season, including the BFI Southbank programme of films, discussions, and immersive events, BFI Distribution titles, confirmed UK-wide events and much more soon.
